osu! PP by Star Rating
Select a star rating to see approximate PP values for No Mod, Hidden, Double Time, and HDDT. All values assume a full combo with 95–98% accuracy.
How Star Rating and PP Relate
Star rating in osu! is calculated by the difficulty algorithm and determines the base PP a map can give. PP does not scale linearly with stars — it scales exponentially. A 7★ map gives roughly three times the PP of a 5★ map at equivalent accuracy, and a 9★ map gives approximately six to seven times as much. This means that small improvements in your ceiling star rating have an outsized impact on your potential PP.
However, star rating alone does not determine PP. A 6★ map played at 99% accuracy gives significantly more PP than the same map played at 92%. The accuracy component uses a very steep exponent, meaning high accuracy at any star rating is well rewarded. The optimal farming strategy combines an appropriate star rating challenge with the highest accuracy you can sustainably maintain.

Star Rating and PP — What You Need to Know
Star rating in osu! is an algorithmic measure of a map's technical difficulty, calculated from the density, spacing, and timing of hit objects. It is the single largest factor in PP calculation — a map must have a high star rating to give high PP, regardless of how well you play it.
However, star rating alone is not sufficient to guarantee high PP. Accuracy, combo, and mod multipliers all interact with star rating. The ideal farming scenario is a high-enough star rating to give meaningful PP, combined with accuracy you can realistically sustain. For most players, this means targeting maps 0.5 to 1 star above their comfortable level — challenging enough to give significant PP, but not so hard that accuracy collapses.
Use the individual star rating pages above to see reference values for NM, HD, DT, and HDDT at each difficulty tier. Then use the PP calculator to enter your exact parameters for a precise estimate before deciding whether to grind a specific map.
PP by Star Rating — Quick Reference
| Stars | NM FC 98% | DT FC 95% | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3★ | 40pp | 68pp | Normal |
| 4★ | 77pp | 135pp | Hard |
| 5★ | 148pp | 248pp | Insane |
| 6★ | 268pp | 435pp | Expert |
| 7★ | 460pp | 720pp | Expert+ |
| 8★ | 740pp | 1,100pp | Ultra Expert |
| 9★ | 1,100pp | 1,600pp | Extreme |
All values assume a full combo with the listed accuracy and approximately 1,000 hit objects. Maps with higher object counts receive a length bonus that can increase PP by up to 15%. For exact values on your specific map, enter the parameters into the PP calculator.
